Contrary to what many may think, the best crossbow isn’t necessarily the fastest. Is the race to build the most powerful crossbow over? Probably not. I bet we’ll see a 600-fps model within the next decade. But for now, crossbow manufacturer seem focused on giving hunters a more compact package rather than additional raw power. That\u2019s good because crossbows are bulky, and they seem to triple in size once you\u2019re up in a tree stand. <\/p>\n

Although none of the top models we’ve tested threaten the 500-fps mark, they’re far from sluggish. The average speed for all crossbows we tested this year was 392 fps\u2014about 50 fps faster than the average speed from 10 years ago. I remember when 400-fps speed was a big deal and you had to pay through the nose to get it. This year, some of the fastest crossbows<\/a> came in at under $600\u2014just one of several surprises our test panel uncovered during this year’s annual crossbow test.
